Choctaw’s Marquonn Journey – Athete Spotlight Presented By BancFirst Choctaw

Marquonn Journey’s story began as a first grader when he asked his father if he could begin wrestling. His father agreed and from that moment on he has loved everything about wrestling. He has not only loved the sport of wrestling, but has also loved everything he has learned from it and the life lessons that go along with competing in athletics.

Unfortunately, after Marquonn’s first grade season, the wrestling program was cut and didn’t return until Marquonn was 10 years old. When the program returned, he still had his love for the sport and excitedly returned to wrestling and hasn’t stopped since. Upon returning, he was able to pick up where he left off and has continued to be successful throughout his career.

Marquonn plays a major role on his wrestling team by bringing a positive attitude to every practice. He said, “finishing practice knowing I gave everything I had” is one of his favorite things about practice. He makes sure to always work hard while practicing on his own and with his team; never stopping the grind. Marquonn has taken on the leadership position for his team during his senior year and has also taken on a role model status for the younger kids.

When not on the mat, you can find Marquonn hanging out with his family and friends or helping with the LifeKids group at his church. You can also catch him at the track field with his fellow track and field teammates throwing shotput and discus.

When asked what his favorite part about wrestling is, Marquonn responded with “reaping the spoils when the referee raises my hand at wrestling tournaments.”

The biggest lesson Marquonn has learned over his many years of wrestling is to never give up. He said “one second makes a big difference, not only in sports but in overall life.”
