Choctaw’s Cade Sanford: Athlete Spotlight Presented By BancFirst
- Updated: February 23, 2020
Choctaw High School senior Cade Sanford is wise beyond his years. When talking about his last season on the gridiron as a Yellowjacket, his words were poignant.
“At Choctaw we like to talk about going 1-0 every day. So we are just trying to go 1-0 against our next opponent, and then 1-0 next week. We take it one day at a time. For me individually, all I want is one more week with my team.”
At the time of writing, Sanford and the Yellowjackets are a day away from a playoff matchup with Muskogee. The receiver doesn’t limit himself to just one sport though, he also plays baseball.
After graduation plans are to study bioengineering, a natural choice to make for the young man who said math was his favorite subject in school.
Sanford’s wisdom remained when he spoke about what having character means to him.
“I believe having character means everything,” he said. “That is how you legitimately define yourself as an athlete and as a person. How you act when no one is around and what your mindset is reflects on the field and the diamond. For me, I just want to do what my team needs me to do. If it’s not me getting the ball, then I want to be leading with the block.”
Sanford went on to say that selflessness and character is not in short supply at Choctaw.
“We have a lot of guys like that,” Sanford said. “And I believe that’s why we made it to the playoffs.”
