Carl Albert’s Jacob Estes and Houston Russell – Baseball Catcher Spotlight Presented by Just Block It Catchers Camp

The Carl Albert Titans are a few years removed from winning three consecutive baseball state championship. But senior Jacob Estes and junior Houston Russell, who could both see time behind the plate, are looking to get the team back there this season.

Titans head coach Tim LaValley says that the opening day starting catcher is still to be determined but he says that he is confident both guys will play big roles for the team this season.

Both Houston and Jake began playing baseball before they started attending school. They were also both part of the team that made it to the state finals last season.

Russell says he is thankful to be in the position he is today but says it was not an easy road.

“It has taken a lot of hard work to get here,” he said. “There has also been a lot of motivation and dedication.”

Being the person and athlete he is today is something that Estes contributes to his parents.

“My biggest role models are my parents,” he said. “They have pushed me to be the best person I can be both on and off the field. I am thankful for them.”

Last season was a big season for both players. Jacob hopes to build off of his numbers from a year ago and be a bigger impact on the field.

“I had a great junior season,” Estes said. “My batting average was .353 and I was lucky enough to play in the state finals with my team. I was also selected to play in the Oklahoma junior sunbelt classic all star team.”

As a sophomore, Houston experienced playing time a little quicker than he expected. But he is hoping to turn that into success this season.

“I got thrown into the fire as a sophomore and it was a great experience,” he said. “I had a great bond with my team as if they were my brothers and we were so close to getting it done.”

Both players are also involved with other groups, outside of baseball. Jacob is a part of FCA and Crew, while Houston is a part of National Honor Society, 4.0 Club, and FCA.
