Bethel’s Laney O’Rorke – Citizen Potawatomi Nation Athlete of the Month

By Ember McElrath

Bethel High School senior Laney O’Rorke plays softball as a right fielder and basketball as a point guard for her school. She is a member of the gifted and talented program, National Honor Society, PROWL-SADD, BancFirst Student Bank Board, and an active tribe member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Laney has been around Citizen Potawatomi Nation her entire life.

“Citizen Potawatomi Nation has been a presence in my life since birth,” Laney said.

Living in Potawatomie county her entire life, she has seen first hand the support the nation gives to their tribe members as well as others in the county.

Being a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation has given Laney the ability to utilize many of their services including health care, dental, and vision, they even purchasing her latest pair of glasses. When she was younger she was able to attend different sports camps through Citizen Potawatomi Nation and now she is able to take classes at Seminole State College while concurrently enrolled in high school.

The Citizen Potawatomi Nation has also helped Laney’s family members including her own mother attend college.

“I feel that education support is one of the most important services that our tribe provides our members,” Laney said.

Laney believes that investing in the tribe members’ education is one of the best things the Citizen Potawatomi Nation can do, because those members then go back and give to their communities.

The best advice Laney has gotten from a member of Citizen Potawatomi Nation was to be proud.

“Be proud of your ethnicity, your ancestors, and you legacy. I am very proud to say that I am a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation,” Laney said.

After high school Laney would like to attend college to pursue a career in the nursing field, in hopes of eventually becoming a Nurse Practitioner with a focus in pediatrics.
