Bethel Football Feature – Presented by Eskridge Honda

The spread/no-huddle offense coach Joey Ginn likes to run has started to come into its own under quarterback Gunner Smith (6-0, 185, Sr.). Smith, a VYPE Top 100 selectee, completed 206 passes on 337 attempts for 2,406 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2018. In his career, he has thrown for 4,008 yards and 41 career TDs. He’s also the team’s punter, with 63 punts for 1,690 yards.

“We try to play fast and play a fun game of football to watch,” Ginn said. “Smith has already broken nine records for passing either in season, game or career.” Smith is also a member of the FCA, STUCO and National Honor Society.

One target he’s sure to find this season is Devin Acklin (6-0, 165, Sr.), who caught 76 balls for 880 yards and nine touchdowns last year. Also look for Drae Wood (6-2, 165, Jr.) in the passing game. Wood has 84 career receptions for 1,018 yards and 14 TDs. Jaylon Gordon (6-1, 165, Sr.) recorded 20 receptions for 251 yards and four TDs in his first year of football.

Up front, Smith will depend on Cole Dyer (5-10, 220, Sr.) and Kaden Stiles (6-0, 240, Sr.). Dyer is starting his third season at center, while Stiles is starting his third season at guard.

Sophomore sensation Corey Metscher (6-1, 190) is back and ready for action. The linebacker captured 132 tackles (83 solo) as a freshman. His production on the defense is crucial for the Wildcats.

Acklin will start in the secondary at free safety. Last year he snagged two interceptions to go with his 82 tackles. He joins Jesse Tucker (6-2, 175, Jr.), who accounted for 42 tackles and two picks of his own.

A pair of linebackers look to clean up what Metscher doesn’t take for himself. LW Moore (6-0, 190, Jr.) and Cache Hankins (6-0, 165, Sr.) nabbed 76 and 62 tackles respectively. Moore had a pick and two fumble recoveries, while Hankins recorded seven tackles for loss.

“I’m super excited for year three in our system,” Ginn said. “Our players already know both our offense and defense so the thinking process is sped up tremendously from years past. We return eight starters on both sides of the ball, several of which already hold Bethel football records or are chasing career records.”

Austin Jennings and Daltyn Zimmerman are new additions to the coaching staff.
