Guthrie’s Luke Dale & Drew Dodgion – OKC Fans Choice Golf Poll Winners – Presented by Harley-Davidson World

VYPE: How long have you played golf, and what first got you interested in the sport?

Dale: I first picked up a club when I was 8 years old, my grandpa was the person who introduced me to the sport. I wouldn’t be the type of player that I am today without him. At first I didn’t really love the game of golf; I was playing in a tournament at Coffee Creek around the age of 12 and broke ninety for the first time and I couldn’t have been more excited. That was the first time that I knew I wanted to play competitively.

Dodgion: I have played golf for six years and I started playing because most of my family played and I thought it was fun.

VYPE: How would you describe this season? Any standout moments?

Dale: By far, this was the best season yet. We won conference, regionals and state all in the same season, and the last time a Guthrie golf team did that was in 1992.  My teammates push me everyday to become a better golfer, friend and mentor. The 2019 State Championship was the time that I realized how amazing my teammates are and how many awesome memories we have made over the years. I wouldn’t be the same golfer if it wasn’t for my teammates. Over the years they have become more like family to me.

Dodgion: This season has been my best season so far because I shot my personal best three different times. My standout moment was making a 45 foot putt for a birdie at State Preview.

VYPE: What is your favorite thing about being a student-athlete at Guthrie?

Dale: So many teachers and coaches push you everyday to become the best athlete and student you can be. I have made a lot of close relationships with many teachers and coaches at our school that I’ll cherish forever.

Dodgion: My favorite part about being a student athlete in Guthrie is the overwhelming support that community gives us throughout our season.

VYPE: Do you have a favorite course to play? Why?

Dale: My favorite course to play is Karsten Creek, in Stillwater. Karsten Creek is unlike any other courses. I love how Karsten Creek requires you to hit an arrange of different golf shots. It’s a course that feels like home.

Dodgion: My favorite course to play is the Lincoln Park West Golf Course because it is a very nice course and I perform well there.

VYPE: What is something people may not know about the game of golf?

Dale: One specific thing I learned this golf season was to have fun. I realized whenever I would put too much pressure on myself that I wouldn’t play to my potential. Every time I took a minute to appreciate the small things I felt happier and it truly benefited my golf game.

Dodgion: What some people may not know about the game of golf is that it’s not all about the swing, it’s about having a strong mental state to get you through 18 holes.

VYPE: Has there been anyone who you look up to as a role model? What have they taught you?

Dale: My biggest role model in my life is my grandpa J.R. Caton. He was the one who introduced me to the game of golf. He hasn’t just taught me lessons about golf, he has taught me life lessons that I’ll never forget. Every time I was feeling upset or down about a golf tournament he always cheered me up. He has been my biggest supporter since I was 8 years old. He has always had a positive outlook on life and I hope I could be half the man he is when I grow older.

Dodgion: The person I look up to is my Dad. He got me into this sport and taught me the basics of golf. He has also taught me to think through the shot that I have because I normally don’t.

VYPE: What are your plans for the future?

Dale: My plans are to attend Oklahoma State University and major in Biochemistry. After I finish my four years at OSU I will apply to be in the University of Oklahoma’s Dental Program.

Dodgion: I am still not sure what I want to do in the future but I want to go to college to play golf and study in the field of forensic science.
