By Jordan Edwards

Shyanne Jones, senior varsity cheerleader at Deer Creek High School has spent the last eight years of her life in cheerleading. She is a main base for her team. Cheer wasn’t what she always did, Jones started out in gymnastics, tried cheer and never looked back.

“I was a gymnast when I was younger and my mom wanted me to try out cheerleading so I went to a tumbling class with a friend and from then on I loved it,” Jones said.

Being a teammate is Jones’ favorite part about cheerleading.

“My favorite part about cheer is becoming close with my teammates and competing with them,” Jones said.

To Jones, being a teammate is bigger than just being on the same team.

“Being a teammate means being a friend and a leader. It means being someone who is understanding and easy to come to for help,” Jones said. “My team is like another family & we are always there for each other.”

Jones looks to her dad as her biggest role model because of his dedication to his sport.

“My biggest role model has been my dad,” Jones said. “When he was 11 he made the decision become a professional motorcycle racer and never let anything get in his way. He has always supported me through all my years of cheerleading.”

Being a cheerleader for majority of school, Jones says that her mom is the reason she has made it to the point she is at today.

“My mom has always pushed me to be the best athlete that I can be,” Jones said. “She teaches me to be encouraging and always help my teammates.”

After high school Jones plans on attending Oklahoma State University to study Veterinary Medicine and plans on trying out for the Oklahoma State University Cheer Team.
