“Talent sets the floor, character sets the ceiling.”

Newcastle senior Maddy North referenced this quote by Bill Belichick to illustrate why she believes good character is one of the most important things an athlete can have. The 6’0 forward for the Lady Racers is a leader on her basketball team because she knows the value of character on the court.

“I try to implement good character on the court by keeping a level head throughout the game even when it gets tough,” she said. “I try to encourage my teammates and help them up when they are knocked down on the court as well as the other team.”

Like many athletes, North picked up her sport early in life. The more she played, the more she fell in love with the competition and team atmosphere. Of course she also appreciates the fans.

“My favorite thing about competing for my school is all the support, not just from my school but the whole town as well!” she said.

The Racer girls definitely had a great start to their season, with three seniors as returning starters and plenty of freshmen to add to the team. Since it is North’s last high school season she is hungry for another Newcastle state title.

“We have a lot of young talent as well as the few of us who have played together before,” she said. “I hope to finish this season with another state championship for my school.”

North has many great role models to look up to in her life, but the biggest influence comes from her family.

“My parents and my sister are my biggest role models,” she said. “They have all taught me so much and have shaped me into the player, and more importantly the person, I am today. The most important thing they have taught me has been how to be an example of Christ to others.”

North is currently involved in her youth group at FBC Newcastle, National Honor Society, and is a committee member on student council, as well as playing volleyball the past three years. After graduation she plans to pursue a degree in sonography or biology to become an ultrasound technician while playing basketball on an athletic scholarship.
